Hardy Genus
Introduction and definition of hardiness
In this section, I present cacti that can withstand negative temperatures.
When we talk about the hardiness of a cactus, it is necessary to first clarify the definition of hardiness. This is the ability of a plant to withstand negative temperatures.
A plant is said to be “hardy” when it can tolerate temperatures below 0°C without dying. The most resistant cacti like Opuntia humifusa can withstand up to -45°C. Its range goes as far as Point-Pelee in Ontario in Canada.
The hardiness of cacti is much debated. I base myself on my experiences and those of others and empirically define a limit. This is why I invite all my readers to keep in mind that these limits are only indicative.
You will find in this section the presentation of hardy genera and species.
